THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A last-minute political intervention has successfully thwarted behind-the-scenes attempts to downsize the Ezhava community's representation to just two berths in the incoming V.D. Satheesan cabinet, which assumes power today with a 102-seat majority.
The induction of Youth Congress state president O.J. Janeesh, alongside Bindu Krishna and M. Liju, has raised the community's ministerial tally to three. Despite this addition, community leaders maintain that the representation remains disproportionately low.
The political turnaround was triggered by data-driven investigative reports and editorials in the Kerala Kaumudi daily, which argued that the Ezhava community—comprising 27% of the state's population—is demographically entitled to at least six cabinet slots. This media campaign was bolstered by a high-profile intervention from the influential Sivagiri Mutt.
Sources indicate that Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan called for urgent consultations with senior Congress leaders yesterday to address warnings that sidelining the state's largest demographic group under pressure from rival religious and communal factions could trigger severe political backlash.
During the deliberations, leaders heavily cited the Kerala Kaumudi analysis, which noted that barring the 2011 Oommen Chandy administration, every coalition cabinet since 1991 has historically accommodated between four and nine Ezhava ministers. The matter was further pressed when Sivagiri Mutt chief Swami Sachidananda personally met with Satheesan to underscore the community's grievances.
Damage control ahead of swearing-in
Anticipating a massive turnout for today’s swearing-in ceremony, Satheesan and the party leadership were keen to resolve the brewing discontent to ensure it did not overshadow the government's debut.
Although the ministerial lists for the Congress and its alliance partners had already been finalised, the leadership initiated a swift damage-control exercise. Following emergency clearance from the party High Command, O.J. Janeesh (representing Kodungallur) was accommodated in the final lineup, simultaneously fulfilling the long-standing demand for Youth Congress representation in the new cabinet.
