Heavy rains predicted, coastal districts on red alert, fishermen warned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of heavy rains in various districts of the state today. Yellow alert has been issued in Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. It is predicted that there is a possibility of isolated heavy rain in these places. Heavy rains mean 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

Meantime, the National Oceanographic Research Centre has issued a red alert in all the coastal districts of Kerala. There is a possibility of strong waves and kallakadal phenomena in coastal areas of Kerala. The IMD and the National Oceanographic Research Centre have warned that there is a possibility of high waves of up to 2.0 meters and black sea phenomena on the Kerala coast from 5:30 to 1 pm today. Coastal areas, especially low-lying areas, are warned of possible inundation and storm surges.

The IMD has informed that workers along the Kerala-Lakshadweep-Karnataka coasts should not go fishing today. The warning said that there is a possibility of strong winds and bad weather conditions along the coasts of Kerala-Lakshadweep- Karnataka with a speed of 35 to 45 km per hour and on some occasions up to 55 km per hour.
