THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Professor Nabeesa Ummal (92), former MLA of Kazhakoottam constituency passed away. She died at her residence in Nedumangad’s Pathamkallu. She is the first woman from the Muslim community to receive a master's degree. In 1999, she became the Chairperson of Nedumangad municipality. She has served as a teacher and principal in many government colleges in the state. She was a scholar and an orator.
She retired from service in 1986 while serving as Principal of University College in Thiruvananthapuram. Nabeesa Ummal was the first Malayalam scholar to become a department head and principal at University college after AR Raja Raja Varma. In the 1987 assembly elections, she won as an independent candidate for CPM from the Kazhakkootam constituency. But in the 1991 elections, she lost to MV Raghavan by 689 votes.
