KOCHI: The incident of a police official handing over his canteen card to the SDPI leader was brought to light by a high-ranking official of the central agency. Special Branch ASI AK Salim was caught handing over his canteen card to the SDPI leader. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the police officer. The incident took place the previous day at the canteen in Perumbavoor, which is exclusive for officers of the central and state forces.
When V.K. Shoukath Ali came to buy a TV using a police card, a high-ranking official was present in the canteen. After taking a look at Shoukath Ali, the officer informed Ernakulam Rural SP Dr. Vaibhav Saxena about the matter. As per the SP's instructions, the impersonation attempt was detected by checking the CCTV. Salim was suspended after it was deemed a major lapse from his side.
Shoukath Ali said he was advised to reach the canteen to collect the gift. Only the officer and his family members who are the card holders can buy items from the canteen.
Recently, pictures of family members were also included in the card. Entry is granted only after scanning and signing to confirm that the person is a family member. An investigation is underway to find out how Shoukath Ali entered the canteen.
