Kerala doctor hacked in Kozhikode: Surgery needed for head injury, assailant booked

KOZHIKODE: Police registered a case of attempt to murder against a person for hacking a doctor of Thamarassery Taluk Hospital. Sanoop, the father of nine-year-old Anaya, who died of Amoebic Meningoencephalitis in Thamarassery, hacked Dr Vipin out in rage over his daughter’s death.

Sanoop was arrested on charges of attempted murder, trespassing, assault with a weapon, and violations of the Hospital Protection Act. He will be produced before a magistrate soon after a medical examination.

Dr Vipin, with head injuries, was shifted to Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode. His skull is reportedly fractured. Authorities informed that he needs a minor surgery to prevent infection. The doctor was admitted to the Neurosurgery ICU.

Sanoop attacked the doctor, alleging that his daughter died because of not receive adequate treatment. Sanoop was heard hollering, "He killed my daughter." Sanoop stabbed the doctor while the latter was talking to the patient's relatives.

Sanoop first arrived at the Thamarassery Taluk Hospital to treat his ill daughter. After the illness worsened, she was referred to the Kozhikode Medical College, but died on the way to the hospital. His younger child had also previously contracted amoebic Meningoencephalitis.

Sanoop's daughter Anaya died of amoebic Meningoencephalitis in Anappara, Thamarassery, in August. Anaya and her siblings had been practising swimming in a pond near their house. It is believed that she may have contracted the disease from there.
