MEXICO CITY: England booked their place in the quarter-finals with a spirited 3-2 victory over hosts Mexico, overcoming both relentless pressure and a second-half red card. Although Mexico dominated possession and completed more passes throughout the match, England made the most of their chances to secure a hard-fought win. Their task became even more difficult in the 54th minute when Jarell Quansah was sent off, reducing the visitors to 10 men. However, England defended resolutely to hold on for the victory.
Jude Bellingham gave England the perfect start, scoring twice in the space of two minutes. He found the net in the 36th minute before doubling the lead in the 38th, putting England firmly in control. Mexico responded before the break through Julián Quiñones, whose well-taken volley from the centre of the penalty area cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 42nd minute.
England restored their two-goal advantage in the 60th minute when captain Harry Kane calmly converted a penalty to make it 3-1. Mexico refused to give up, and Raúl Jiménez scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to reduce the margin to one goal once again.
The hosts launched a sustained assault in search of an equaliser during the closing stages, but England's disciplined defence stood firm to seal a memorable victory. England will now face Norway in the quarter-finals after the Scandinavian side secured its place in the last eight with a win over Brazil.
