Rishikanta falls just short of Gold, secures Commonwealth Silver

GLASGOW: India added a second medal to its Commonwealth Games tally on Sunday after weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam produced a spirited performance to claim silver in the men's 60 kg event, narrowly missing out on gold after a dramatic clean and jerk contest.

Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan captured the title with a Commonwealth Games record total of 273 kg, while Kenya's Joshua Amunga Mboya finished third with 260 kg. India's first medal of the Games had come earlier through Jhandu Kumar, who won bronze in para powerlifting.

Rishikanta finished with an overall total of 264 kg after an impressive display in the snatch. He cleared 116 kg and 119 kg before matching/setting the Commonwealth Games record with a successful lift of 121 kg on his final attempt, putting himself firmly in contention for the gold medal.

The decisive phase came in the clean and jerk. Rishikanta opened with a successful 143 kg lift but could not improve on it, failing in his attempts at 148 kg and 151 kg. Those missed lifts allowed Aniq to pull clear and secure the gold.

Aniq's combined total of 273 kg established a new Commonwealth Games record, while Mboya sealed the bronze with lifts of 115 kg in the snatch and 145 kg in the clean and jerk.

Rishikanta arrived in Glasgow with strong credentials, having won the 60 kg title at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, and added another international medal to his growing résumé with Sunday's silver.
