WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a good friend and expressing hope that their friendship will help India and the United States reach a trade agreement.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office at the White House, Trump said he shares a strong relationship with Modi and is optimistic about the ongoing trade talks between the two countries.
At the same time, Trump claimed that India had benefited for years from its trade relationship with the United States through high tariffs. However, he said the situation has changed after the US imposed tariffs and introduced new trade policies.
Trump's remarks come as both countries are making intensive efforts to strengthen economic ties and resolve long-standing trade disputes. Concerns remain, however, over the Trump administration's proposal to impose an additional 12.5% tariff on imports from 60 countries, including India.
As part of the ongoing trade negotiations, the United States has reportedly agreed to reduce tariffs on certain Indian products from 50% to 18%. Officials from both countries held extensive discussions in New Delhi from June 1 to 4, covering issues such as goods trade, customs procedures, and economic security cooperation. US Ambassador Sergio Gor and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal have indicated that the trade agreement is in its final stages, with most of the major issues already resolved.
