WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has paid compensation to the complainant in a sexual abuse case. The compensation was paid to author E Jean Carroll of $5.63 million (approximately Rs 54 crore). The amount, which was kept under court supervision, was transferred to Carroll's law firm. The act was following the order of US District Judge Louis Kaplan. Trump had strongly opposed this.
The civil court awarded $5 million in damages in the case in 2023. The amount has now been transferred with interest. This is the first time Trump has been forced to pay damages to Carroll.
The complaint alleged that Trump abused her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1996. However, Trump had termed the allegations as false. Trump has also accused Caroll of being a ploy to sell her book. Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court last month rejected Trump's appeal against the $5 million damages.
Caroll's lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, said that a nine-member jury unanimously found President Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation three years ago. The lawyer said that she was pleased to inform that Caroll has received the damages awarded by the jury.
