WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has made a controversial remark about the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump's remarks came after Iran's entire top leadership gathered for the funeral.
‘They're all there, we can take them all out with one shot, but we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with. They're begging to make a deal,' Trump told Axios.
He added that the two sides have decided to take a week off from the talks until Khamenei's funeral is over. Both sides have agreed not to attack each other during this time. Many ordinary Iranians are attending the funeral. Trump said he was shocked by their grief.
Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike in Tehran on February 28. The government has planned a massive funeral that will last for about a week. Khamenei's funeral was delayed due to the war. His body was kept at an unknown location. In addition to Khamenei's, the bodies of his family members were placed on public display.
The bodies were brought to the Grand Mausoleum on Friday. The public was allowed to enter yesterday to pay homage. Thousands of people, wearing black, braved the scorching heat. The bodies will be carried in a procession through Tehran tomorrow. The funeral of Khamenei and his family members will be held in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.
