WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has suffered a setback in the midterm elections, with the Democratic Party making significant gains across almost all states, leaving Trump's Republican Party trailing. The Democrats are now almost certain to take control of the House of Representatives.
The Democratic Party is leading in 130 seats in the House, while Republican candidates are ahead in 80 seats. Results for another 225 seats are yet to come in.
In the US Senate race, the Democrats are leading in 53 seats, while the Republicans are ahead in 44. Indian-origin Vivek Ramaswamy lost the gubernatorial election in Ohio, where he was the Republican candidate. The Republican Party is also facing setbacks in most states where gubernatorial elections were held.
Meanwhile, Trump has made it clear that even if the Democrats take control of Congress, he will use his veto power to block legislation brought against him or his party. In an interview with CBS News, Trump said he would be able to pursue his political agenda regardless of the election results, as the power to veto legislation remained in his hands. He also said he would be happy to be known as 'Mr Veto' if the opposition secured a majority in Congress and sought to push through legislation.
