US warns citizens to reconsider Saudi travel; Houthi attacks, terror threat cited

WASHINGTON: The United States has urged its citizens to reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia, citing the risk of Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting American interests. The US State Department issued a Level 3 travel advisory on Tuesday, asking Americans to reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia. The Yemen border region in Saudi Arabia has been placed under a Level 4 advisory, meaning “Do Not Travel,” due to security risks.

The United States has also warned that Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have threatened further attacks on Saudi Arabia. Falling debris from intercepted drones and missiles could also pose a risk. US citizens living and working near energy infrastructure and military bases, particularly those closer to the Yemen border, may face increased risks, according to the advisory.

The US has also warned of the possibility of terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia. Such attacks can occur with little or no warning, particularly around holidays, the advisory said.

For US government employees working in Saudi Arabia, travel within 20 miles of the Yemen border is prohibited for security reasons. Non-essential travel to the Saudi city of Qatif is also prohibited for them. Special authorization is required for US government employees travelling to the provinces of Jizan, Asir, Najran and Qatif, according to the advisory.
