Woman laughs and pulls male friend towards her before train approaches; Tragic death for two

WASHINGTON: A woman of Indian origin and her male friend of Nepal were crushed to death by a train at a substation in New York. The two were fatally knocked down by the train at a lower Manhattan subway station. The woman has been identified as Malaika Chitre of Dayton in New Jersey and Navam Kaul of Sayreville in New Jersey. Both were aged 24. According to American media reports, one of them may have accidentally fallen onto the railway tracks, prompting the other person to jump from the platform to help. The CCTV visuals of it have emerged.

Chitre, who worked in the United States as a pharmaceutical operations specialist, and Navam Kaul, a data analyst, were former students of Rutgers University. CCTV footage shows the woman smiling and pulling her friend towards her as a train approached the subway station in Lower Manhattan. The train can be seen striking both of them moments later. It is not clear which one of the two fell onto the tracks first. However, both died on the spot itself.

Their bodies were found beneath the third and fourth coaches of the train. The two were struck by a No 4 train that was traveling downtown on the local track at the Spring Street subway station. Police were alerted about the accident at 3:14 am on Sunday. Reports say that there were around 100 passengers on the train at the time of the incident. They were later safely shifted to the platform.

The New York Post reported that the train operator told investigators that he saw two sitting on the tracks and tried to apply the emergency brakes, but was unable to stop the train. Police said an investigation has been launched into why the two, who lived in New Jersey, had come there. Authorities are also examining whether they were drunk and whether suicide was a possibility. However, no suicide notes have been found.
