Indian origin woman shot dead by stalker in US; accused commits suicide

CALIFORNIA: A young man took his own life after shooting a woman of Indian origin in the United States. The incident occurred on Tuesday in front of a restaurant in Sacramento, California. The victim was identified as 38-year-old Shalini Thakur. Police stated that the perpetrator, a man named Rohit, had been harassing Shalini for some time. Rohit committed suicide immediately after shooting Shalini dead.

Although Shalini attempted to flee during the incident, the assailant chased her down and opened fire. Citing eyewitnesses, authorities reported that after she fell to the ground, the assailant approached Shalini and fired a shot into her head. When police cornered him, the assailant shot himself and died.

The police arrived at the scene after receiving information about the shooting around 3 PM. Although a medical team examined Shalini—who was found critically injured near the restaurant—they were unable to save her life.

Shalini's mother, Sudhesh Kumari, stated that Rohit had been stalking and harassing the young woman for about a year. Rohit had wanted to marry Shalini, but she had turned down the proposal, citing the age difference between them. Sudhesh, who lost her husband two years ago, is shattered over the tragic death of her only daughter.

Investigating officials stated that Rohit, who had previously been in the custody of authorities in Arizona, did not possess legal immigration documents to stay in the United States.
