"First and foremost, my grandmother": Apsara Vydyula’s heartfelt farewell to S. Janaki

MYSURU: Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, whose voice became synonymous with Indian cinema across generations, was laid to rest with full state honours in Mysuru on Sunday. The celebrated singer died on July 11 at the age of 88 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Thousands of fans, admirers and members of the film fraternity gathered at Maharaja College Grounds to pay their final respects to one of India's most beloved singers.

Her granddaughter, Apsara Vydyula, had announced the news of her passing in an emotional Instagram post, saying Janaki died peacefully, surrounded by her family. She also requested privacy for the family as they mourned the loss.

Speaking to reporters during the funeral on Sunday, Apsara reflected on her grandmother's life, legacy and the void her passing has left behind.

"This is a great loss, not just for our family, but for the whole nation and the world," Apsara told reporters. She highlighted the singer's versatile and expressive vocal style, adding that anyone familiar with her music would recognise her unique contribution to the arts.

She said Janaki's legacy extended far beyond her music, describing her as a gifted artist who was also compassionate, humble and generous in her personal life. While millions knew her as an iconic singer, the family remembered her as a loving grandmother whose warmth touched everyone around her.

"I am very honoured to have been her granddaughter in this lifetime. I have learned so many things from her. Not just as a celebrity, but first and foremost, she was my grandmother. I remember her as a kind, gentle, wonderful person who was kind to animals. She really loved animals," Apsara shared.

Apsara said that although the family was bidding farewell to Janaki, her music and the values she embodied would continue to inspire generations. She added that while the loss was deeply painful, her grandmother's voice and legacy would live on through the countless lives she touched.
