Actor Arjun Sarja is riding the wave of commercial success with his latest release, Blast. The high-octane family entertainer is steadily marching toward the coveted ₹50-crore milestone, marking a career-first box office club entry for the veteran actor. Directed by debutant Subash K. Raj, the film has turned into a massive crowd-puller in Kerala as well. Audiences are particularly thrilled by the heavy action sequences where co-stars Abhirami and Preethi Mukundan match strides with the legendary "Action King."

A multifaceted veteran of Indian cinema, Arjun has left his mark across five languages not just as an actor, but also as a director, producer, screenwriter, and playback singer. In this discussion, he opens up about his latest blockbuster, the discipline keeping him ageless, and his future behind the camera.

Mirroring Reality in Blast

Q: Can we see glimpses of the real-life Arjun Sarja in your character, Karate Master Rajaraman, in Blast?

Arjun Sarja: My extensive background as a martial artist makes executing on-screen combat skills feel entirely natural. There are numerous parallels between my personal disposition and Rajaraman. I firmly believe in listening to people when they are going through a difficult time. Whether one can personally relate to their circumstances is secondary; the simple act of listening and engaging in conversation is what truly matters. This intrinsic trait makes the character feel incredibly close to my heart.

Resurgence of Action Cinema

Q: Does the success of Blast signal a grand comeback for pure action cinema in Tamil films?

Arjun Sarja: Audiences consistently embrace diverse genres, be it comedy, horror, or drama. Whenever a film is presented exceptionally well, filmgoers support it wholeheartedly. The action design in Blast was executed brilliantly, explaining why it resonated so deeply across multiple languages.

Secret to Timelessness

Q: Audiences often marvel that you look exactly the same as you did decades ago in classics like Gentleman and Mudhalvan. What is the secret behind this preservation?

Arjun Sarja: More than three decades have passed since Gentleman hit screens. Remaining relatively unchanged over the years is purely a divine blessing. Regular exercise, a disciplined diet, and a positive mindset heavily influence a person's appearance. Looking back at how I have maintained consistency across all these years surprises me as well.

Unwavering dedication remains my greatest reward. Training in martial arts since the age of sixteen provided a rock-solid foundation, allowing me to preserve my health and fitness to this day.

Sustaining the 'Action King' Legacy

Q: Spanning a career of over 45 years, how do you continuously live up to the formidable 'Action King' title?

Arjun Sarja: Maintaining that label brings a distinct sense of responsibility, almost akin to fear. Fans admire me for my action choreography, discipline, and on-screen performance. When people spend their hard-earned money to watch my films in theatres, I owe it to them to look and perform exactly as they expect. This realisation drives me to maintain a strictly disciplined life governed by consistency. The title 'Action King' survives solely because of the audience's enduring affection.

My goal is to infuse every character with the same boundless energy I possessed during my Gentleman days. Sustaining this momentum for decades requires a fair share of luck. Mere luck, however, is insufficient. One must keep a clear vision in sight, and the Almighty will guide the way. Reaching that destination demands active effort. Individuals often falter or grow complacent halfway through their journey. An old adage says you can lead a horse to water, and God will show the path, yet drinking that water remains the horse's ultimate choice. Success requires personal execution.

Lifelong Dream of the Khaki Uniform

Q: You have portrayed a significant number of police officers throughout your career. Is there a personal affinity toward these roles?

Arjun Sarja: Joining the police force was my genuine childhood ambition. My father harboured a similar dream of donning the uniform, though he was unable to realise it. I always envisioned myself as a 'super cop' in real life. Destiny ultimately guided me into the world of cinema, allowing me to fulfil those aspirations through my acting. Early in my career, industry insiders frequently noted that I possessed the natural bearing of a law enforcement officer. This deep-seated desire likely reflects in my facial expressions and performances, making my portrayal of police characters highly popular among viewers.

Navigating the Balance Between Heroism and Villainy

Q: Prior to Blast, some fans felt they missed your signature style and screen presence in recent outings. How do you address that?

Arjun Sarja: Playing antagonistic roles naturally limits the dramatic build-up and style typically afforded to a protagonist. Mainstream hero roles inherently offer far more opportunities to command the screen, explaining why some missed my traditional swagger. My performances in Irumbu Thirai, Kadal, and Leo earned critical acclaim and awards despite me not playing the central hero. Those characters were either villains or heavily performance-oriented.

My negative portrayal in Vidaamuyarchi similarly received an exceptional reception. While a segment of the audience loves my darker turns, others openly express their discomfort at seeing me as a villain. Taking these diverse opinions into account, I intend to focus primarily on positive characters for the foreseeable future. Exceptional narratives will always tempt me to explore any challenging role.

Embracing the New Wave of Filmmakers

Q: As an accomplished filmmaker yourself, how do you view the creative wave brought by young directors like Aswath Marimuthu, Pradeep Ranganathan, and Subash K. Raj?

Arjun Sarja: Working alongside the newer generation of storytellers is an absolute joy. Each generation introduces a distinct methodology to scriptwriting and cinematic presentation. Collaborating with young directors brings fresh perspectives and innovative concepts to the table. I firmly believe in constantly upgrading my skills as both an actor and a director. Engaging with the younger crop allows me to better understand and adapt to evolving trends.

Future Horizons and Malayalam Cinema

Q: You have not appeared in a Malayalam film since Virunnu. When can the audience expect your return?

Arjun Sarja: Malayalam cinema holds a special place in my heart. I comprehend the language well, although I struggle to speak it fluently. The industry produces an incredible variety of films that transcend standard action tropes, backed by brilliant storytelling techniques.

Currently, my focus is directed toward helming a new film in Tamil. I am being extremely meticulous with my selections to ensure my next outing matches the standard set by Blast. Several scripts are under consideration. Simultaneously, I have been approached to direct a project in Hindi. Negotiations are actively progressing, and a definitive decision will be made within the coming weeks.
