KOLKATA: Signs of a major political crisis are emerging in West Bengal. Reports suggest that 23 Lok Sabha members of the Trinamool Congress are preparing to join a rebel faction within the party. According to sources, the move could take place as early as next week. The rebel group was formed by around 60 MLAs under the leadership of Ritabrata Banerjee following a dispute with Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee.
The rift became public after a meeting led by Ritabrata yesterday. However, some MLAs argue that despite internal differences, Mamata Banerjee should continue as the leader of Trinamool Congress. After taking charge as the Opposition Leader on Wednesday, Ritabrata told the media that he has no intention of splitting the party.
