NEW DELHI: Delhi Police arrested six members of an internationally linked gang for siphoning funds obtained through cyber fraud and sending them abroad after converting them to cryptocurrency. Five of those arrested are bank employees. Investigations revealed that two local banks in Kerala also have links to this fraudulent network.
Police said the accused had connections with a Chinese national and received cash payments in exchange for facilitating money transfers. It is believed that the group had been operating since 2013. The mobile phones used for these transactions were kept five kilometres away from the location of the accused; it is suspected that this was done to make it difficult for the investigative team to trace the origin of the fraud and the actual location of those controlling the transactions.
The role of individuals who facilitated the transfer of funds by leveraging connections within the banking system is also under investigation. The police have not disclosed the names of the two banks in Kerala, nor the total amount transferred through the fraud. The investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the connection with the Chinese national, the total sum transferred abroad, and the specific role played by each member of the group.
