One vehicle stolen every 2.3 minutes in India, NCRB data shows

NEW DELHI: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released data showing a rise in vehicle theft cases across the country. According to the latest NCRB data, one vehicle is stolen in India every 2.3 minutes. More than 2.3 lakh vehicles were reported stolen across the country in 2024.

Delhi recorded the highest number of vehicle thefts, with 40,139 cases. Bihar reported 28,411 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 26,782. Uttar Pradesh recorded 20,315 vehicle thefts, while Rajasthan reported 17,353 cases. Haryana recorded 15,578 cases, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 14,644 and Karnataka with 11,659.

In Kerala, 1,701 vehicle theft cases were reported in 2024. Tamil Nadu recorded 7,663 cases.

Ladakh reported the lowest number of vehicle thefts, with two cases. No vehicle theft was reported in Lakshadweep, while three vehicles were reported stolen in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The rising number of vehicle thefts across the country has become a growing concern for vehicle owners and law enforcement agencies.
