CHAMOLI: A landslide and flow of water occurred in a tunnel under construction amidst the flash floods that shocked Uttarakhand. Seven workers who were working on the tunnel died and 14 were injured. The disaster occurred in the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd (THDC) tunnel under construction in Mayapur near Pipalkoti in Chamoli.
According to the information provided by the authorities, 22 people were working at the site when the disaster occurred on Thursday. A major rescue operation was launched immediately after the accident and 21 people were rescued. Seven had died by then. 14 people were shifted to various hospitals for treatment. The rescue operation was carried out by a joint team of National Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Management Authority, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Fire Service and Police personnel.
The injured were first admitted to a hospital in Gopeshwar and later to the Base Hospital in Srinagar and AIIMS in Rishikesh for specialist treatment. The authorities said the situation at the site is being monitored.
