Theft at military center: Former army personnel in custody, missing AK-47 and other stolen items recovered

HYDERABAD: Reports say that the Telangana police have taken one into custody in connection with the theft of weapons including AK 47 from the compound of the Indian Army’s Madras Regiment in Secunderabad Cantonment area. The weapons went missing from the regiment on August 30.

The one in custody had retired from service recently. There are hints that this person was well aware of the military camp. The police are questioning him. The police have recovered the missing weapons. AK 203 rifles, an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle, six pistols and ammunition. In addition to the weapons, around 1,800 rounds of ammunition and 21 magazines had gone missing. Around 700 of the missing rounds were for AK-203 rifles.

The weapons were found missing on the night of August 30. The authorities then filed a complaint with the Bollaram Police on Monday. Police registered an FIR in the incident.

Only authorised personnel were permitted to enter the area where the weapons were stored. Police initially suspected the involvement of military personnel in the theft. The incident occurred at a time when only a small number of guards were deployed for security duty. The Army and Malkajgiri Police jointly conducted the investigation in the incident.
