KANPUR: A four-member gang beat a trader to death after he questioned them for urinating in front of a market. The dead has been identified as Amit Gupta, an auto trader. Gupta succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment after sustaining serious injuries in the attack.
A youth noticed the four-member group urinating near the market and questioned them. He told them that urinating there was inappropriate as there were houses in the vicinity. Angered by this, the group assaulted him in the middle of the road. The attackers were reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
Gupta suffered severe head injuries and collapsed unconscious within minutes. The accused then fled the scene. Family members who learned about the incident rushed Gupta to the hospital. He died while undergoing treatment for two days. Following the post-mortem examination, his body was handed over to his relatives.
The police have collected CCTV footage of the incident. Police said further action could be taken only after examining the footage and identifying the accused.
The family expressed concern over the delay in arresting the accused. Gupta’s wife, Shalini, said the family feared that the accused might attack them out of retaliation for filing a complaint and urged the police to arrest them as soon as possible. She also said that the children were frightened following their father’s death and that she had even been afraid to file a complaint because the family has to travel through the place where he was attacked, every day.
