Unusually large fish spotted in Bihar after Nepal floods; health warning issued

PATNA: The impact of the flash floods in Nepal is now being felt in India as well, with a new concern emerging in Bihar, which shares a border with Nepal. Unusually large fish, unlike those normally seen in the region, have been spotted in water bodies across the state. Some people who ate the fish reportedly fell ill and sought medical treatment, raising concerns among local authorities. Those who consumed the fish have reportedly experienced symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, breathing difficulties and abdominal pain.

The situation is particularly serious in West Champaran district, where authorities have urged people to remain cautious. Residents have been advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible if they develop any health problems after eating fish. People have also been asked to immediately inform the authorities if they spot such fish in ponds, rivers or other water bodies. Authorities have also begun efforts in some areas to catch and destroy the fish.

Officials suspect that the flash floods may have washed farmed fish from ponds and other artificial water bodies into rivers. There is also a possibility that the fish could have travelled long distances along with the bodies of animals and humans swept away by the floods. Authorities suspect that consuming such fish could be responsible for the reported health problems. People have therefore been advised not to eat fish from local water bodies until the water levels return to normal. The warning comes after reports that bodies of people from Nepal were found in some Indian rivers following the devastating floods.
