THRISSUR: In a shocking incident, a 70-year-old woman was hacked to death by her son in Pavaratty on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Dolly, wife of the late Cheriyan. Her son, Benhar (46), has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The incident took place at around 10 am on Monday. Dolly was working in the courtyard of her house when Benhar allegedly approached her from behind, grabbed her and slit her throat. He then allegedly went inside the house, brought out a machete and inflicted deep injuries on her head. Dolly, who suffered serious injuries, was first taken to a private hospital in Pavaratty and was later shifted to the Medical College Hospital. She died at around 11.30 am while undergoing treatment.

A neighbour, Davis of Arakkal House, who had come to work on the family's property, witnessed the incident and tried to stop Benhar. However, he was also attacked by the accused and suffered injuries to his hand. Pavaratty panchayat member Varghese said Benhar had mental health issues and that there were frequent disputes between him and his mother. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The exact motive and circumstances that led to the alleged murder are yet to be ascertained.
