THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The spa in Kovalam where a minor girl was allegedly sexually exploited is owned by a government official, according to a media report. A private television channel has reported that the actual owner of the spa is a health inspector with the city corporation and that the establishment was being operated under benami ownership.
The information came to light during the examination of the mobile phone of Nishanth, a native of Poovar who was arrested in the case. Police have launched an investigation into the ownership link.
The 16-year-old girl from Andhra Pradesh was allegedly sold to the spa in Kovalam by her maternal aunt and her husband. She was subsequently sexually exploited at around 10 spas. The girl was brought to Kovalam in July by the couple, who were responsible for her care following the death of both her parents. The relatives who allegedly sold her are believed to have returned to Andhra Pradesh.
The girl had been working at different spas since July and was subjected to sexual exploitation during this period. She later fell in love with a young man and attempted to escape. The incident came to light following her attempt to flee.
Sajith, a native of Alappuzha, and Nishanth, a native of Poovar, have been arrested in connection with the case. Police suspect that a sex racket may be involved. The investigation is underway to trace the transactions carried out through various agents and identify spas operating illegally.
