THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: DGP Ravada Chandrasekhar has termed the misconduct by public representatives at the Adoor Police Station a serious matter. He was speaking to the media after CCTV footage of Congress district panchayat member Sreenadevi Kunjamma and party workers creating a ruckus at the police station surfaced.
The DGP said a report had been sought from the Pathanamthitta Superintendent of Police (SP) and that the alleged lapses would be investigated seriously.
"It is normal for public representatives to visit police stations, but the police would examine whether anything beyond that had taken place," he said.
The police are preparing for a detailed investigation into the incident. The SP has directed that a probe be conducted at the DySP level.
The incident took place around 10.30 pm on July 11, when YouTuber Rajan Joseph, who had been arrested following a complaint alleging a defamatory social media campaign against Sreenadevi Kunjamma, was brought to the police station. Videos circulating on social media show Sreenadevi Kunjamma, the complainant, and her supporters confronting and speaking to Rajan Joseph while he was inside the lock-up. The group reportedly included Feni Ninan, a supporter of Rahul Mamkootathil, who was expelled from the Congress.
However, Sreenadevi Kunjamma has denied attacking Rajan Joseph. She said neither she nor her supporters assaulted him inside the police station. According to her, the police had called her to identify the accused. She also pointed out that Rajan Joseph himself had said he was not beaten up.
"We only asked him, 'Are you fine, brother?' while standing outside the lock-up," she said.
