Heavy rain likely in state today; People of five districts cautioned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain likely in the state today as well. A yellow alert has been issued for five districts--Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Heavy rainfall is expected in these districts.

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as receiving between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours. An orange alert has also been issued for Kasaragod for the next three hours.

As part of the Kallakkadal phenomenon, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services has warned of the possibility of coastal flooding along the Kerala coast due to high waves ranging from 0.3 metres to 1.1 metres until 11.30 pm on September 26. A similar warning has been issued for the Kanyakumari coast, where waves between 0.9 metres and 1.6 metres are expected until 11.30 pm tomorrow.

Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to remain vigilant due to the possibility of coastal flooding.

Safety precautions

• As rough seas may intensify, people in vulnerable areas should relocate to safer places as instructed by the authorities.
• Small boats and fishing vessels should not be taken out to sea during this period.
• During periods of high waves and the Kallakkadal phenomenon, bringing fishing vessels back to shore can be as dangerous as taking them out to sea. Therefore, both launching and bringing vessels ashore should be avoided when the waves intensify.
• All beach-centred activities, including tourism, should be completely avoided until the warning is withdrawn.
• Fishing vessels such as boats and traditional craft should be securely moored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can help prevent collision-related accidents.
• Ensure the safety of fishing equipment.
• Completely avoid trips to beaches and recreational activities in the sea.
• Exercise extra caution as coastal erosion is possible.
