Onam plans in muddle for Malayalees; Tamil Nadu's decision vital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Onam plans are stuck in ambiguity as Kerala suffered crop damage of Rs 67.44 crore on 1,882 hectares in the rain fury.

The state now requires 15,000 tonnes of vegetables from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for Onam.

The flash flood that occurred over the past two weeks ruined the hard work and hopes of 23,537 farmers. The vegetables needed for Onam range from 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes. About 70 per cent of this is local produce. With the introduction of the Onam vegetable farming scheme, the inflow of vegetables from other states decreased.

Horticorp is preparing to approach agencies from other states for vegetables.

Prices will increase

Due to continuous rains and waterlogging in the fields, even the remaining crops are rotting. Due to lack of availability, prices will increase. Pathanamthitta is the district where the most farmers have suffered; 5,303 people.

Setback for Alappuzha

Alappuzha suffered the most crop damage, which is worth around 13.05 crores. The most damage has been done to paddy and banana crops.

These two crops account for more than 60 per cent of the total economic loss. The rest is due to vegetables.

Agricultural damage
