TIRUR: A 54-year-old mathematics teacher was arrested for allegedly beating a 10-year-old female student with a cane and fracturing her hand at a school near Tirur. Following the incident, the school management placed the teacher under suspension.
The accused has been identified as Balraj, a resident of Klari Moochikkal, who was employed at the Kallingal M.S.M. Higher Secondary School. The victim, Shriya, a class five student, is the daughter of Suresh Babu.
The incident occurred on Friday when Shriya returned to school after a three-day absence due to a fever. While she was copying the missed lessons from a classmate’s notebook, the teacher allegedly approached her from behind and struck her right hand forcefully with a cane, claiming that she was not paying attention to the class.
Despite the child complaining of severe pain, the teacher reportedly ignored her distress and forced her to write on the classroom blackboard using her injured hand. Later, as the hand began to swell significantly and the child started crying out of an inability to eat her food, other teachers intervened and escorted her home.
Shriya’s family immediately admitted her to a private hospital in Puthanathani, where medical tests confirmed a bone fracture in her right hand. Her parents subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the Kalpakanchery police.
The police registered a case against the teacher under various legal provisions, including the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, and recorded his arrest. Meanwhile, officials from the Child Rights Commission visited the child's residence and recorded detailed statements from the victim and her parents to initiate further proceedings.
