Rush in Priyadarshini bus, Gundalpet

SULTAN BATHERY: About 200 people crowded the Priyadarshini bus that had the board Gundalpet gleaming through the glass. Known as the "Flower Pot of India”, Gundalpet draws crowds at all times of the year. However, things went awry at the Sultan Bathery bus depot as KSRTC employees refused to operate the service due to the excessive number of passengers. The incident took place at the Sultan Bathery old bus stand at 10.30 am on Wednesday.

As Priyadarshini buses allow free travel to women, even the space near the gearbox on the side of the driver's seat was occupied. The driver refused to take the vehicle, citing the risk involved and the fear of taking accountability in case of any tragedy. KSRTC officials and police arrived and removed a few people standing at the door.

However, after the discussion, the driver agreed to take up the service with the understanding that no one else would be allowed to board the bus.

All KSRTC services from Sultan Bathery to Gundalpet are Priyadarshini buses. Three buses operate to Gundalpet. Women go to the scenic location to walk around the flower fields and grape orchards. Most of the passengers are from outside Wayanad district. There is an influx of tourists to Gundalpet during holidays. The rush was the same on the last Saturday and Sunday.
