THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One more Shigella case has been confirmed in the state. A three-year-old girl from Nannamkuzhi in Kottukal grama panchayat of Thiruvananthapuram has been diagnosed with the disease. When the child and her family had gone to a temple in Nagercoil on August 12, they drank sharbat on the way. The child had diarrhea and vomiting from August 13 onwards She was then admitted to the SAT Hospital.
Shigellosis is caused by the bacteria belonging to the Shigella genus. The main symptom of this disease is diarrhea. However, it is more serious than ordinary diarrhea. Shigellosis is transmitted through the use of contaminated water, stable food, consumption of unwashed fruits and vegetables, close contact with Shigella-infected people, and eating food prepared by infected people. Everyone should avoid eating food cooked in unsanitary conditions during this rainy season.
If the symptoms of the disease become severe, the risk of death is higher in children under the age of five and those with weakened immune systems. If not careful, Shigella can spread very quickly. The disease can spread easily through direct or indirect contact with the faeces of patients.
Symptoms of Shigella include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, and bloody stools. Since the Shigella bacteria primarily infect the intestines, diarrhea may also be blood-stained. Symptoms last for two to seven days. In some cases, symptoms may last longer. In some cases, symptoms may not appear at all.
