Radhakrishnan Potty’s final gift; new life for six

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Retired revenue official G. Radhakrishnan Potty, 67, gave a new lease of life to six people through organ donation. His kidneys, liver, skin and corneas were donated after he was declared brain dead at KIMS following a cerebral haemorrhage. A native of Kalayapuram in Kottarakkara, Potty had retired from the Kollam Collectorate. He was admitted to KIMS on September 21 after developing physical discomfort. He was declared brain dead at around 5pm on September 25 following a cerebral haemorrhage.

One kidney and the liver were allocated to patients at KIMS, while the second kidney was sent to Government Medical College, Kottayam. The skin was donated to a patient at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, and the corneas to patients at the Thiruvananthapuram Eye Hospital.

The police arranged a green corridor to transport the kidney to Government Medical College, Kottayam, by ambulance. The ambulance left KIMS at noon on Saturday and reached Kottayam at 2.40pm.

Potty's wife, Lathika Devi Antharjanam, and daughter R. Sreelakshmi consented to the organ donation. The process was coordinated under the leadership of K-SOTTO.

“Even amid their profound grief, the family came forward for this noble cause. The government honours their gesture,” Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said.
