THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Officials at Vanchiyoor police station recalled the midnight incident involving Odisha IPS officer Shefeen Ahamed K, which gifted them a good service entry.

Shefeen was the battalion DIG at that time. The incident took place on August 27, 2018. ASI SS Jayakumar of Vanchiyoor station and CPOs Ajith and Anil were conducting the vehicle inspection at Thakarparambu in Thiruvananthapuram. After the usual questions, the driver was asked to blow into the breath analyser. No beep came from the machine. They checked the vehicle and asked for the vehicle number, name and phone number.

It was at this moment that the officials found that the driver they had just talked with was indeed Deputy Inspector General of Police. When they saluted and apologised, the DIG said, 'You were doing your duty, weren't you?' and gave his phone number.

The next day, a call reached the Vanchiyoor station from the DIG's office and inquired about the night patrollers. The three policemen who were on duty the previous night waited for their suspension order. But instead, what reached them was a cash reward of Rs 500 and a good service entry. It was Shefeen’s way of doing things. There was no compromise in law enforcement. Professionalism was his hallmark, and he lived a life without pomp.

Shefeen Ahamed was diagnosed with cancer in 2025. Although he returned cured, the disease worsened again four months ago. He underwent specialist treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad.

The Odisha Police condoled the passing of IG Shefeen Ahmed, CID Crime Branch, Cuttack. He was a distinguished officer of the 2003 batch. He served with dedication, honesty and professionalism. His invaluable contributions in the field of cybercrime investigation will be remembered with respect.
