THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The offering of Bali for their ancestors on the occasion of Karkidaka Vavu has started. A heavy rush is being witnessed since early morning in various Bali Tharpanam centres. Thousands have gathered at prominent centres including Aluva Manappuram, Thiruvallam, Thirunavaya and Varkala Papanasam to offer Bali for the salvation of their departed loved ones.

Considering the large crowds, extensive arrangements had been made in advance at all major Bali Tharpanam centres. Bali rituals began early in the morning at all 40 temporary Bali platforms set up along the banks of the Periyar. Metro services also began from midnight yesterday. The fact that there had been no rain for the past two days helped prevent mud from accumulating at Aluva Manappuram, making it easier for those arriving to perform the rituals.

As there is a strong current in the river, authorities have strictly instructed devotees who enter the water after performing the rituals to follow safety guidelines. Police security and traffic-control arrangements have been put in place at all centres. Additional staff have also been deployed at various locations to assist those arriving to perform the rituals.
