CHENNAI: In a major administrative move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered a comprehensive revamp of the state's iconic 'Amma Canteens' (budget eateries). The Chief Minister directed officials to modernise the infrastructure of these centres and ensure the distribution of hygienic, high-quality, and flavorful food to the public.
The directive follows a high-level review meeting convened by the Chief Minister after receiving multiple complaints regarding the declining quality and taste of the food served at these subsidised canteens.
Legacy of Amma canteens
The Amma Canteen initiative was originally launched during the AIADMK regime between 2011 and 2016. The first canteen was inaugurated in Chennai on February 24, 2013, to mark the birthday of the then-Chief Minister, the late J. Jayalalithaa. The network was subsequently expanded across various urban pockets in the state. Currently, there are 383 Amma Canteens functioning under the Greater Chennai Corporation, alongside 237 units managed by various other local bodies across Tamil Nadu.
