Stole 35 sovereigns and Rs 30,000 saved by mother-in-law; woman arrested

ALAPPUZHA: A 26-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing around 35 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 30,000 from her husband’s house. The accused, G. Athira, a native of SL Puram, Cherthala, was arrested by Poochakkal Police.

The theft took place at the house of Raghunathan in Ward 7 of Thaikkattussery Panchayat under Cherthala Taluk. The gold ornaments and cash were kept in an almirah at the house. According to the police, the accused stole 35 sovereigns of gold, including a chain, bangles and anklets, along with Rs 30,000 that her mother-in-law had saved through a chit fund.

After the incident, the accused went into hiding and stayed at different places. She was finally arrested from Kottayam. The arrest was carried out under the direction of Cherthala DySP Anilkumar T. The police team included SHO Shefeek, SI Venus, ASI Lijimol, and CPOs Girish, Praveesh and Praveen. The accused has been remanded.
