THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: T.K. Govindan was solemnly sworn in as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Taliparamba constituency during the inaugural session of the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly.
All eyes were on Govindan, a former member of the CPI(M) Kannur District Secretariat, as he stepped up to take his oath. In a notable moment that captured the assembly's attention, Govindan was greeted with applause from the United Democratic Front (UDF) members as he entered the well of the House. However, before proceeding with the official oath-taking ceremony, he walked over to the opposition benches to exchange a warm handshake with Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan.
Govindan secured his seat in the Assembly following a high-stakes electoral battle in Taliparamba, a traditional CPI(M) stronghold. He defeated P.K. Shyamala—a leader of the Janathipathya Mahila Association and wife of CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan—by a decisive majority of 12,551 votes. Shyamala's candidacy had reportedly triggered internal friction within the CPI(M) prior to the election, adding further significance to Govindan's electoral victory.
