Maiden Kerala awards presented by Governor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Tuesday distributed the maiden Kerala awards announced by the state government on the model of Padma awards to distinguished individuals who have made comprehensive contributions to society in various fields. The awards were distributed at a function held at the Raj Bhavan. On behalf of writer MT Vasudevan, his daughter and renowned dancer Ashwathi V Nair received the Kerala Jyothi award. T Madhava Menon received the Kerala Prabha award for comprehensive contributions in the field of social service including civil service and scheduled caste welfare activities. Deepti Omchery Bhalla, daughter of renowned playwright Omchery NN Pillai, received the Kerala Prabha award on behalf of her father.

Dr Sathyabhama Das Biju (Dr Biju) known as the 'Frog Man of India', magician Gopinath Muthukad, businessman Kochouseph Chittilappilly and Vaikom Vijayalakshmi received the Kerala Sree award.

Kerala Prabha award winner actor Mammootty, Kerala Sree award winner famous sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman and science campaigner MP Parameswaran did not attend the function. Kanayi Kunhiraman had earlier rejected the award in protest at the disrespect shown to his sculptures. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presided over the function. Chief Secretary VP Joy introduced the award winners.
