SHANKUMUGHAM: Three women were arrested while trying to steal a gold pendant from a senior citizen at a temple here in Thiruvananthapuram. New Delhi natives Manjula (40), Roshini (20) and Mallika (62) were arrested by the Poonthura police.

The trio tried to take the necklace, worth two sovereign gold, from Chirayannur native Radhamani (65), who came to Ambalathara Ujjaini Mahakali Devi Temple. The three of them, standing right behind Radhamani, tried to cut the necklace using tools. The cut was improper, leading to the necklace tightening around Radhamani’s neck. As she screamed in fear, the trio thrashed Radhamani and tried to flee. However, the temple officials and locals were alerted by then and caught them in the act. The three were later handed to Poonthura police.

As there is a huge inflow of people from the northern states of India during the Attukal festival, the police have advised devotees to practice caution in protecting their valuables.
