Diver drowns during maintenance work on ship

KOCHI: A contract diver drowned while repairing a naval ship. The incident happened at the Cochin Shipyard. The dead has been identified as Anwar Sadath (25) of Malappuram. The accident happened Tuesday afternoon.

Anwar Sadath was a diver at the diving academy based at Chullikkal in Ernakulam. The company provides divers on a contract basis for the repair of the ship. The repair of the ship had started since yesterday morning. Those with him understood about the accident after they lost contact with Anwar, who sank to the bottom of the ship for the work. The diver, who had been working in this field for a year, was monitoring safety from above the ship. Anwar Sadath is a diver with five years of experience in the field.


The Ernakulam South Police said they received a notification about the accident at around 4 pm. He was breathing when taken to the hospital, but died at around 5 pm. The police said the inquest proceedings are being completed and the body will be sent home today once the postmortem is completed. The police added that further investigation into the incident will be conducted.
