SAO PAULO: A 21-year-old woman met with a tragic end after falling 130 feet during a bungee jump in São Paulo, Brazil. The accident happened after staff members reportedly forgot to attach the safety rope to her body. The deceased was identified as Maria Edward Rodrigues de Freitas.
The incident took place during a jump organised by a private company. Without noticing that the safety bungee cord was not attached to Maria’s body, the staff took her to the edge of the bridge and pushed her down.
Six employees have been arrested in connection with the incident. Rescue teams reached the spot immediately after the accident, but the woman had already died at the scene. Her body was later taken to a hospital for postmortem procedures.
Videos recorded at the site show the staff members taking Maria to the edge of the bridge and dropping her. People standing nearby can be heard panicking and shouting, “The rope, check the rope,” as the accident happened.
Local authorities said that the safety cord, which is designed to support jumpers during a fall, was not connected to the woman’s body. She fell into the valley below and died. Officials confirmed her death and said that her body was transferred to the Legal Medical Institute for postmortem examination.
