OTTAWA: A 16-year-old boy got stranded on a dangerous mountain slope in Canada after planning a hiking trip with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The incident took place on Crown Mountain in British Columbia on Saturday. The teenager, Bryce Vincent Gowryluk, had used Claude AI to plan the trip but lost his way and became trapped among the rocks.
The teenager had set out from Grouse Mountain towards Crown Mountain but took a wrong turn and ended up on a dangerous trail known as the 'Widowmaker'. The challenging hike was expected to take seven to eight hours. Unable to move forward or return safely, he sought help from the police.
Following this, the North Shore Rescue team launched a rescue operation. However, the difficult terrain made it impossible to land a helicopter near the spot where the boy was stranded. Rescuers then used ropes to descend the rocky slope and bring him to safety. The rescue operation lasted around three hours, after which the teenager was safely airlifted by helicopter.
The teenager said he had used Google Maps and other tools along with Claude AI to plan the hike. Following the incident, rescuers warned hikers not to solely rely on AI-generated directions when navigating challenging mountain trails.
