KOLKATA: A preliminary post-mortem report has revealed that the 11-year-old girl, whose body was recovered from a pond in Baruipur, West Bengal, was thrown into the water while she was still alive. The incident, which took place in the North 24 Parganas district near Kolkata, has sparked widespread outrage and violence across the region.
According to police sources, the minor went missing on Saturday evening after she left her home to buy a birthday gift for a friend. On Sunday, her body was discovered inside a sack in a pond located approximately 25 kilometers away from Kolkata.
The post-mortem report indicated that the victim suffered severe injuries, including bite marks on her body and private parts. The findings also noted that she had sustained a critical head injury, suggesting that she was either struck with a lethal weapon or her head was violently smashed against a hard surface. Investigators confirmed that the girl was alive when she was cast into the pond, as water was found in both her lungs and stomach. The police stated that the cause of death was a combination of severe internal bleeding from the head injury and drowning.
Following the discovery of the body, massive violence erupted across South 24 Parganas. An infuriated mob gathered in the area and lynched one of the suspects.
The police have made significant progress in the investigation, arresting the prime suspect, Anand Sardar. He was apprehended after law enforcement officials tracked his mobile phone tower location. With his arrest, the total number of individuals arrested in connection with the case has risen to three. Additionally, three other suspects have been taken into custody for questioning. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), spearheaded by the Additional Superintendent of Police, has been formed to conduct a comprehensive probe into the incident.
