Cop clings to car roof for 40 km, nabs drug smuggling gang 

COIMBATORE: A police officer detained a drug smuggling gang by clinging to the roof of a moving car for nearly 40 kilometres. The incident happened in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. Three people were nabbed following the daring act by head constable Velmurugan of Kovilpalayam police station. A video of the cop clinging to the roof of the car is going viral on social media.

The incident happened during a vehicle inspection by Velmurugan and sub-inspector Vignesh. The officers stopped the car from Karnataka which was carrying 300 kilograms of gutka. While Vignesh was checking the items in the rear of the vehicle, the Rajasthan natives inside the car pushed him aside. They then shut the car doors and sped away. Seeing this, Velmurugan jumped onto the roof of the car, but the gang continued driving at high speed without stopping.

Other passengers travelling along the road captured the video of Velmurugan who was dangerously clinging on to the roof of the moving car. After getting the information of the incident, the Karumathampatti police following the vehicle along with an ambulance. When the gang managed to escape from Karumathampatti, the police alerted the Avinashi police station. Officers there joined the chase. After travelling nearly 40 kilometres, the car was intercepted near the Annapoorna Hotel in Avinashi, where the ambulance and police vehicles surrounded it.

Two of the occupants managed to flee, but one was taken into custody. A search led to the arrest of the other two suspects shortly afterwards. All three are natives of Rajasthan.

Police recovered 300 kilograms of banned gutka and other tobacco products from the car. The gang was allegedly attempting to smuggle the contraband from Bengaluru to Coimbatore.
