NEW DELHI: In a development that deepens the political challenges for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The case stems from an address she delivered during a rally in Kolkata ahead of the assembly elections.

The legal action follows a formal complaint lodged by an individual identified as Tushar Kanti Das at the Siliguri police station. The complainant alleges that the former Chief Minister’s speech contained highly provocative remarks capable of disrupting public tranquillity, damaging communal harmony, and undermining democratic institutions.

Local authorities confirmed that the investigation remains in its preliminary stages. A senior police official stated that investigators are thoroughly reviewing the recording, analysing the context, and examining every aspect of the speech before determining the next course of action.

The Trinamool Congress leadership has strongly condemned the move, dismissing the allegations as entirely politically motivated. Party spokespersons asserted that the case is part of a sustained campaign by political adversaries to target the top leadership and destabilise the party, which is already navigating internal friction caused by recent rebel movements among its MPs and MLAs.
