HYDERABAD: A pregnant woman committed suicide following the harassment by her husband and mother-in-law. The tragic incident happened at Gadipeddapur village of Alladurg mandal in Telangana's Medak. The woman identified as Sushmita (23) was five months pregnant. Sushmita and G Abhilash got married 18 months ago.

In the complaint to the police, the woman's mother Janabai said that she was physically and mentally harassed by her husband. He also suspected her fidelity. Janabai said that her mother-in-law had ill-treated her daughter.

Janabai told police that on June 23, she had gone to Abhilash's house to discuss the arrangements to be done for her baby shower. A dispute broke out between the two families and Abhilash demanded a DNA test for the unborn child in the presence of both families. Both families intervened and the matter was settled temporarily. The family later said the harassment continued. Two days later, she was found hanging at her residence, said Janabai. The police have registered a case on Janabai's complaint. Sushmita's body was handed over to the family after the postmortem.

Police said Abhilash and his mother were arrested and produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial remand. The police said that further investigation is underway into the incident. Presently, a case has been registered under the charges of abetment to suicide and harassment.
