CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Police have intensified their investigation into an alleged conspiracy, code-named "Project Meghalaya," to topple the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Vijay in Tamil Nadu. The case relates to allegations that attempts were made to bribe TVK MLAs in a bid to bring down the government. Earlier, police questioned senior journalist Vijayan and arrested nine people in connection with the case.
Police have also issued notices to several DMK leaders suspected of having links to the alleged conspiracy to destabilise the government. However, the opposition has dismissed the allegations, calling them politically motivated and aimed at gaining political mileage.
The investigation began after TVK Uthangarai MLA N. Elaiyaraja filed a complaint alleging that YouTuber Thirunavukkarasu and others offered him Rs 35 crore to vote against his party during Assembly proceedings. Elaiyaraja also alleged that he and his family received threats after he rejected the offer.
According to the police investigation, there was a plan to offer money to around 15 TVK MLAs as part of the alleged attempt to topple the government. Police believe Thirunavukkarasu was the key conspirator behind the operation.
