COIMBATORE: Six members of a family, including two children, died in a road accident near Uthukuli in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur district. One person is undergoing treatment after suffering serious injuries.
The victims have been identified as S Easwaran (55), a native of Salem Saminathapuram, his wife Thirumakal (50), his son-in-law M Mukilan (35), Mukilan's three-year-old son Sreenith, nine-month-old Kanish, and Easwaran's relative J Sivagami (65). Mukilan's wife, Hema (31), who suffered a serious head injury, is undergoing treatment at Tirupur Medical College Hospital.
The car the family was travelling in collided with a diesel tanker truck. The accident occurred while they were returning after attending a funeral. Easwaran was driving the car. The diesel tanker coming from the opposite direction collided with the car near Uthukuli.
The lorry driver fled from the spot after the accident. Uthukuli police reached the spot and sent the bodies to Tiruppur Medical College Hospital for postmortem. The police registered a case in the incident. A search has been launched for the absconding truck driver.
