Former DGP Tomin Thachankary found guilty of acquiring Rs 64.70 lakh in disproportionate assets

KOTTAYAM: Tomin J Thachankary, former state deputy inspector general of police, has been found guilty in a case alleging that he acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income while holding an official post. The order was issued by the vigilance court in Kottayam. The trial in the case was completed on Wednesday. The case is that he had acquired illegal assets worth Rs 64.70 lakh during his official tenure from January 2003 to July 2007.

A vigilance inspection found expenditure amounting to this sum, but Thachankary was unable to account for the corresponding income. The investigating team found that he had accumulated assets 135.80 percent disproportionate to his income during the period under investigation. The probe was initiated based on a complaint filed by Bobby Kuruvila, alleging that Thachankary had acquired houses, flats, properties and other assets beyond what could be justified by his income while in service.

After Thachankary was promoted to the rank of DIG in 2007, the investigation was conducted under the leadership of a DySP. By the time the chargesheet was filed, Thachankary had been promoted as state deputy inspector general of police.

The prosecution examined several witnesses, including a former joint secretary of the home department. The defence examined former additional chief secretary, a former additional DGP, income tax officials, and Thachankary’s sister as defence witnesses.
