Kerala rains to intensify: IMD issues Yellow alerts across multiple districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rain is likely to intensify across Kerala over the next five days as two low-pressure systems continue to influence weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

A fresh low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal–north Odisha coast and is expected to strengthen over the next two to three days. Another low-pressure system over southwest Rajasthan and neighbouring areas continues to persist.
With both systems remaining active, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall across Kerala from July 25 to 29.

Yellow alerts have been issued for isolated heavy rainfall in several districts over the coming days. The warning denotes the possibility of rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
On July 27, the alert will be in force for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. On July 28, it will cover Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod, while Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod remain under alert on July 29.

The IMD has also issued a weather advisory for fishermen. Fishing activities along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts are not expected to be affected on Friday.
However, rough conditions are likely over parts of the Arabian Sea in the coming days. Winds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are expected from July 25 to 28 over the west-central Arabian Sea, adjoining east-central Arabian Sea, the north and southwest Arabian Sea, and waters off the Somalia and Oman coasts.

Along the north Maharashtra coast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea, wind speeds could reach 50-60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph on July 25. Similar conditions are forecast off the Gujarat coast and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea, where winds are expected to blow at 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph.
